Open Automation Organization UAO welcomes new members, Schneider Electric actively promotes open ecosystem

At the 2023 Hannover Industrial Fair, the Open Automation Organization UAO (UniversalAutomation.org) demonstrated a revolutionary next-generation open automation platform, which runs the same automation application on multiple hardware devices independently of the manufacturer, and lays the foundation for the seamless integration of IT information technology and OT operation technology with a portable, interoperable, hardware-software separated, plug-and-play automation system, helping to unleash the full potential of Industry 4.0. At the same time, UAO also welcomed many new members, including two Chinese companies.

As one of the first industry pioneers to join UAO, Schneider Electric has been committed to creating a new era of open collaboration, and continues to promote the development of next-generation industrial automation with its expert experience in digital transformation in energy management and automation.

The industrial operations field is undergoing a thorough transformation, and it is urgently needed to make full use of cutting-edge technologies such as machine learning, augmented reality, real-time analysis and the Internet of Things, just like the IT field, to bring about a step-by-step improvement in performance, agility and sustainability. However, closed and proprietary automation limits the widespread application of new technologies, slows down the pace of innovation, hinders the integration of third-party components, and keeps upgrade and maintenance costs high. The shared runtime advocated by Schneider Electric and UAO is changing all this.

UAO was founded in 2021 and is an independent non-profit association that promotes the reference implementation of industrial-grade runtime based on the IEC61499 open standard by sharing source code. Its members include industrial and information manufacturers, integrators, end users and academic institutions including Schneider Electric. Currently, there are more than 40 member units including 4 domestic institutions.

Schneider Electric and UAO are committed to promoting the concepts of standardization, openness and universality, helping members of the organization to innovate and create interoperable solutions, thereby promoting sustainable and lasting positive changes in our industry. This way of sharing code can ensure that the runtime of the platforms provided by all manufacturers is exactly the same, and maximize the universality, consistency, compatibility and high quality of the software, greatly speeding up the speed of manufacturers developing products and bringing them to market, and reducing the cost of user development and maintenance of applications.

EcoStruxure Open Automation Platform launched by Schneider Electric is the first open automation system based on UAO shared runtime launched by UAO members. It has been upgraded to V23.0 at this year’s Hannover. UAO also demonstrated a series of products based on UAO runtime at Hannover. By using a shared runtime based on the IEC61499 open standard, software becomes a portable asset, enabling industrial control systems to be modeled and developed as a single integrated system, and can also be deployed as a distributed system, thereby shortening design and debugging time, improving operational efficiency, and increasing productivity, achieving “plug and play”.

Wang Yong, Asia Pacific representative of UAO, said: “The open automation promoted by UAO is a unified universal platform that does not rely on specific hardware. It will greatly shorten engineering time and reduce the total cost of ownership of end users. The benefits of end users adopting a universal automation platform will greatly accelerate the development of the UAO platform. At present, three UAO members in China are developing products based on shared runtimes, and we look forward to the launch of more open automation products. The latest version of IEC 61499 has been transformed into a Chinese national standard and officially implemented in 2022, which will also promote the promotion and use of UAO.”

The digital transformation of the entire industrial chain requires an open ecosystem, and the development and growth of the open ecosystem requires the participation of more companies. As more manufacturers, system integrators, users and research institutions committed to open automation join the open automation organization UAO, the entire automation field will usher in a thorough revolution, providing important support for thousands of industries to improve resilience, efficiency and sustainability, and work together for the future of industry.

ABB Formula E to showcase leading e-mobility technology on Earth Day

The 7th and 8th rounds of the 9th season of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship will be held at Berlin Tempelhof Airport

ABB B&R technology reduces battery costs and improves their performance, thereby accelerating the popularity of electric vehicles

ABB e-Mobility will provide charging infrastructure for the Special Olympics World Games held in Berlin in June

This weekend, the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship will be held at Berlin Tempelhof Airport in Germany.

This 2.355-kilometer-long, 10-turn airport track is a unique stop on the schedule – the drivers will compete at this historic airport. The track is a very rough concrete apron, not an asphalt road, so it is very challenging to wear the tires and requires careful management of power, which will make the two events more variable and exciting.

Daniela Luzanin, Head of ABB Formula E Partnership, said: “We look forward to the return of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship to Germany, one of ABB’s largest markets worldwide. It is gratifying that the competition coincides with this year’s World Earth Day. FE Formula E and the ABB team are committed to promoting the popularization of electric vehicle applications, reducing emissions and creating a more sustainable future together.”

ABB plays an important role in the German automotive industry, providing robotics and automation solutions and helping it build electric vehicle charging infrastructure. For consumers around the world who are interested in buying electric vehicles, their decisions are largely influenced by two factors: price and range. This makes battery production particularly critical, as batteries account for about one-third of the cost of electric vehicles, and the quality of batteries directly affects the mileage per charge.

Throughout the assembly process of battery cells and modules, ABB helps automakers minimize production costs while meeting key quality requirements, making electric vehicles more affordable. For example, by using the ACOPOStrak conveyor system from B&R, ABB’s mechanical automation division, to achieve continuous single-piece flow of battery production, combined with the X-ray inspection device of Germany’s Exacom, the production line can achieve an inspection speed of 175 batteries per minute. The ACOPOStrak shuttle enables batteries to be positioned and transported with high precision and stability, thus improving the efficiency of production line transportation.

ABB has been at the forefront of electric vehicle charging infrastructure in Germany, with a total of 3,519 DC chargers installed across the country, 129 of which are located in Berlin. ABB is also one of 20 companies participating in the HoLa high-performance charging project – funded by the German government, the world’s first megawatt-level charging project for heavy goods vehicles, which will help achieve zero-emission road transportation.

After two Formula E events, the German capital will welcome the next major sporting event in June. From June 17 to 25, the Special Olympics World Games will be held in Berlin. This is the first time that Germany has hosted the world’s largest inclusive sporting event, where thousands of athletes with intellectual disabilities will compete in 26 sports. ABB has been a partner of the German Special Olympics organization for more than 20 years, and ABB employees will once again come to the venue as volunteers to support the event. In addition, ABB will provide and manage the charging infrastructure for more than 60 electric shuttles operating during the Games.

ABB is also actively promoting the development of rail transportation electrification, working with Switzerland-based rail vehicle manufacturer Stadler to help Berlin Transport Company (BVG) achieve more energy-efficient and sustainable transportation. In the German capital, more than 600 subway vehicles are equipped with ABB’s latest generation of traction converters. Replacing 30-year-old vehicles with modern vehicles equipped with ABB’s customized technology not only meets the demand for more reliable and efficient services, but also helps to accommodate the growing number of passengers.

In 2022, ABB acquired the PowerTech Converter (PTC) business, a leading supplier of auxiliary power converter solutions for light rail vehicles and subways, headquartered in Berlin. Its solutions provide the power required for important systems that improve passenger comfort, such as HVAC systems, lighting, safety equipment, doors, and vehicle battery charging. The complementary product portfolio helps ABB continue to innovate and develop more energy-saving solutions.

After the two races in Berlin, the competition will move to the legendary Monaco street circuit on May 6. According to the schedule, the ninth season will host 16 races in 11 locations around the world.

Seizing the development opportunities of eco-friendly automotive interior materials, Continental AG’s Changzhou plant starts the third phase expansion project

The implementation of the Phase III expansion project will further enhance Acella’s surface material production capacity

The Phase III expansion project fully implements the material-driven concept and adheres to sustainable and intelligent production

April 12, 2023, Changzhou. Technology company Continental announced that the second joint venture company jointly invested with Jiangsu Changshun Group in China, Changzhou Factory, officially launched the Phase III expansion project.

During the entire project construction process, the Changzhou factory will use part of the existing land and an additional 9.2 acres (about 6,000 square meters) of land to build a plant of about 12,000 square meters, a raw material warehouse of about 3,250 square meters and supporting public facilities of about 1,500 square meters, and renovate an area of about 1,000 square meters in the existing plant. The project is scheduled to be completed in May 2024.

In terms of equipment, the Phase III expansion project will purchase coating machines, printing machines, slurry mixing equipment, embossing machines and various auxiliary equipment and environmental protection equipment, which is expected to add an annual production capacity of 13 million square meters of high-performance composite materials to the Changzhou plant and reach an annual production capacity of 35 million square meters of surface materials.

Dr. Dirk Leiss, head of Continental’s Surface Solutions Business Group, said: “As the world’s largest automobile consumer, the Chinese automobile market has broad development space. Among them, we see that more and more Chinese car owners have begun to pursue higher standards in terms of materials, design and green environmental protection for vehicle interiors. The Phase III expansion project of Continental’s Changzhou plant can not only better meet the diversified needs of Chinese car owners in vehicle interiors by further improving the production capacity of high-quality surface materials, but also create favorable conditions for the company to better establish itself in the Chinese surface material application market. We will also continue to expand technology research and development and production operations in the Chinese market, and provide more intelligent and sustainable surface solutions to drive the growth of the local automobile industry.”

Acella surface material production capacity has been fully improved again

Continental’s Acella surface material is a high-performance eco-friendly decorative material. The product uses water-based paint with extremely low volatile matter content and plasticizers without reproductive toxicity. It does not contain contact allergens, heavy metal stabilizers and antimony trioxide, and has passed the strict environmental protection standard certification of Oeko-Tex Standard 100 of the International Environmental Textile Association. At present, Acella has a history of 125 years and has become a well-known surface material brand of Continental Group. It is widely used by major automobile manufacturers in automotive interior parts such as seats and door trims.

Since the production of the Changzhou plant, the demand for Acella surface materials in the Chinese market has been increasing. As of 2022, the plant has produced a total of 100 million square meters of Acella surface materials. This phase III expansion project is a comprehensive improvement of the Changzhou plant’s production capacity after the second expansion in 2018, and it is also a reinforcement of Acella’s competitiveness in China. In addition, the patented development and production of a variety of environmentally friendly, low-odor, and low-temperature resistant PVC artificial leathers will also be a highlight of the Changzhou plant’s phase III expansion project.

The Phase III factory implements the concept of sustainable and intelligent production and manufacturing

Keywords such as “sustainable”, “emission reduction” and “ecological and environmental protection” are not only the development trend of the automotive interior industry, but also an important part of Continental’s green factory construction goals. In the Phase III expansion project, the Changzhou factory will implement the concepts of LEED and China’s green industrial buildings in design and construction, which is reflected in the following aspects: the roof of the factory is fully paved with solar photovoltaic panels; a new equipment heating method is adopted and an energy supervision system, wastewater treatment and recycling system, and rainwater recycling system are installed; the indoor lighting of the factory uses a combination of natural lighting and LED lamps, and the outdoor lighting is achieved through solar street lights, and building materials that reduce the heat island effect are used.

Intelligent production will also be a major feature of the Phase III expansion project of the Changzhou factory. By introducing automated equipment into production links such as automatic defect detection and identification systems, AGVs, and sample delivery robots, the Changzhou factory has a highly stable production process and product quality, which has greatly improved the factory’s operating efficiency and product qualification rate.

At present, Continental and Jiangsu Changshun Group have completed the signing of the investment agreement for the Phase III expansion project of the Changzhou factory. The specific land planning scheme and project construction plan for the Phase III factory have also been approved.

Troubled budget carrier Spirit Airlines said it would sell planes and cut jobs; its shares rose 15%

Spirit Airlines Shares of the troubled budget airline surged Friday after the carrier said it would cut jobs and sell planes.

The stock closed up 16% for the day at $2.79 a share.

Late Thursday, Spirit unveiled a plan to cut costs and raise cash by selling 23 older Airbus jets. The sale will bring in $519 million, Spirit said in a securities filing.

The company also said it would cut about $80 million in costs by cutting jobs.

Last week, the airline again delayed until the end of December the refinancing of more than $1 billion in debt to give its credit card processor some breathing room.

Spirit has struggled to return to profitability after the pandemic, facing shifts in travel demand and the grounding of dozens of Pratt & Whitney-powered aircraft.

Despite Friday’s gains, Spirit shares are down more than 80% this year after a judge blocked JetBlue Airways’ plan to acquire Spirit. .

Spirit did not immediately comment on the number of layoffs but said its 2025 capacity will be in the mid-teens from this year. The company began furloughing about 200 pilots in September. The company said flight attendants were “in a good position” because many crew members took voluntary leave.

Earlier this week, The Wall Street Journal reported that Spirit and Frontier Airlines had restarted merger talks, driving the stock higher. The two airlines did not immediately comment. The two budget airlines had reached a merger agreement but were forced to break off an offer to acquire Spirit outright in April 2022 when JetBlue intervened.

Late Thursday, Spirit forecast a third-quarter operating margin of negative 24.5%, better than its previous forecast of a negative 29% margin in the third quarter.

Why flights to Europe are the cheapest they’ve been in years

Flights between the U.S. and Europe have never been this cheap in three years, with many countries just lifting coronavirus restrictions.

Even in the late fall and winter, when traffic is traditionally light (outside of major holidays), fares are low.

“It’s hard to book flights this time of year,” said Brett Snyder, a writer for the travel website Cranky Flier.

“Affordable” transatlantic fares to Europe averaged $578 in November, down from $619 a year earlier, according to flight tracking company Hopper.

That’s the lowest price for the month since 2021, when fares were $479, and with much international travel in the doldrums because of the pandemic, Hopper data shows.

After the year-end holidays, fares in January 2025 are even lower: $558, compared with $578 in 2024, but up from $488 in January 2022, Hopper said.

On the other hand, domestic airfares have been more expensive every month from November through March than they were a year ago.

Many airlines, including financially troubled Spirit Airlines and profitable Southwest Airlines, have cut flights or cut growth plans for next year, helping keep U.S. airfares stable. A shortage of aircraft has also limited airlines from adding flights.

Overall, there have been some periods of weaker demand, executives at the largest U.S. airlines, Delta Air Lines, United Airlines and American Airlines, said on Tuesday, a week before and after the U.S. presidential election, and Trump said.

How airlines got here

Airlines are racing to add flights between the U.S. and Europe to meet post-pandemic travel demand.

This growth isn’t just happening in the peak season. Executives noted they are seeing increased demand in the shoulder season to Europe as travelers look to avoid hot summer temperatures and crowds. So they are also adding flights in the off-peak season.

Airline capacity between the U.S. and Europe in the fourth quarter was slightly lower than last year, but higher than in 2019 and nearly double the same period in 2021, according to Cirium.

“I expect prices to be low next year (to Europe),” said Hayley Berg, chief economist at Hopper.

The peak European travel season is now two years old, and many travelers are just finishing trips to popular destinations such as Spain and Italy, which means fewer tickets will be booked in the off-season.

“It’s not like last year when airlines can make a ton of money,” said Scott Keyes, founder of travel app Going (formerly Scott’s Cheap Flights).

Airlines typically offer discounts during the off-season, but this year’s discounts are cheaper.

“That’s the sign,” Keyes said. “When they have to discount, they have to stimulate demand.”

To keep travelers from getting tired of European vacation spots when the warm-weather travel season arrives next year, airlines are trying new things. United Airlines, which noted that many passengers have been heading to major European cities, plans to expand flights to more remote destinations such as Greenland and Mongolia next year.

“We can achieve the same financial results outside of our partner hubs,” United Chief Commercial Officer Andrew Nocella said on an earnings call last month. “So we’re looking around the world for new destinations, popular destinations and destinations where, most importantly, we can make money.”

For applications where the VMIVME-7455 must be configured as IDE master device or when it is the only device on the IDE interface; for example, when used with a VMIVME-7751 with an internal hard disk drive, a different cable assembly is required. When the VMIVME-7455 is placed adjacent to the VMEbus computer, use the VMXC-9 cable. For applications where the VMIVME-7455 is used with a two-slot computer, such as the VMIVME-7751, use the VMXC-K cable.

PVD164A2059 3BHE014340R2059 AC800 Controller Transparent software structure and easy programming

The AC 800PEC is the perfect way to unite the system design capabilities of ABB’s ControlIT with the control and simulation capabilities of MATLAB® / Simulink®. Quick implementation of complex control algorithms (e.g. model predictive control) reduces development cycles and costs. Furthermore, the system is open to future technologies.

Implementation of the AC 800PEC software on the three performance levels provides an exceptional range of control and communication functionality:

Level 1: System engineering (ControlIT) ABB’s ControlIT supports all 5 IEC61131-3 programming languages and uses ABB’s Control Builder as the programming tool. This is the level on which system engineers implement functions that do not require high-speed performance but demand quick and easy adaptation to a specific project. AC 800PEC controllers can also be fully integrated into ABB’s 800xA automation systems.

Level 2: Product & control development (MATLAB / Simulink™)

Fast closed-loop control applications are designed using MATLAB® / Simulink®. C-code is automatically generated and downloaded to the embedded device using Real-Time Workshop® from MathWorks®.

Typically, it is on this level that control developers will implement the control, the protection, the state machine and other functions.

Level 3: Communication & very fast logic (VHDL)

Extremely fast processes are programmed in VHDL. Protocols and some control logic requiring extremely short cycle times are implemented on this level. The standardized tasks are available as firmware modules and are not accessible to the application developers.

Modularity and connectivity for any size and performance

Scalability in size – from small and compact to large and modular

For any application size, the optimum hardware configuration is easily achieved: the processing power can either be centralized at one location with distributed logical I/O devices, or intelligent I/O devices can carry out specific tasks in the field to enhance performance and relieve the central processor.

Three system architectures provide scalability from small and compact to large and modular systems:

Compact

One processor module with integrated, fast I/O devices. This

configuration is ideally suited for:

− Smaller applications

− Limited-space applications

− Intelligent field devices, e.g. subsystems in distributed applications

Standard

One processor module with separate, fast logical I/O devices. This configuration is ideally suited for:

− Standard industrial applications with central processing

− Small applications with detached, fast I/O

Modular

One or several central processor modules with separate, fast, intelligent I/O and fast logical I/O devices. Full and trouble-free integration into higher-level plant control systems as well as future expansions and reconfigurations are easy thanks to the fully modular architecture.

Scalability in performance – you and your process define

what you need

Your process defines the required performance level. Several

pre-configured software packages are available for easy and

straightforward engineering:

− DCS (Distributed Control System)

− Processing cycle times down to 1 ms

− Use of slow I/O

− Programming in Control Builder

− PLC (Programmable Logic Controller)

− Processing cycle times down to 1 ms

− Use of fast and slow I/O

− Programming in Control Builder

− PAC (Programmable Automation Controller)

− Cycle times down to 100 μs

− Use of fast and slow I/O

− Programming in MATLAB/Simulink and Control Builder

Process interfaces for any speed The AC 800PEC provides two kinds of I/O – fast and slow. Whereas the fast I/O system covers read and write operations requiring less than 1 ms, the slow I/O system covers speeds above 1 ms.

The fast I/O system is AC 800PEC specific, using devices connected exclusively via fiber optic links, and brings substantial advantages compared to electric concepts:

− Fast communication between controller and I/O devices

− High immunity to electromagnetic interference

− Potential-free connections, making isolating transmitters obsolete The slow I/O modules from ABB’s S800 system can be added to any configuration, depending on project needs

Well-suited to a harsh environment – the AC 800PEC

Since the AC 800PEC controller is used in different ABB solutions, there is a huge installed base, which enables the extraction of long-term lifecycle experiences.

Traction, with its particularly harsh environmental conditions, is one of the most important applications of the AC 800PEC.

The controller operates through a wide temperature range (-40 to +70 °C), with vibrations according to traction standards. The compact solution is the ideal response to the demands of restricted spaces and allows integration of the processing unit together with all the I/O’s in the same compact hardware device.

Reliability is a must – the AC 800PEC in powergeneration

Typically, excitation systems are used for generator control in power plants where high reliability is the no. 1 requirement. Due to the very short process cycles, traditional redundancy concepts are no longer applicable.

The modular architecture of the AC 800PEC not only greatly reduces the complexity of the overall system, but redundant subsystems also provide increased reliability. Should a problem occur in one subsystem, the main controller switches over to the remaining subsystems, which are scaled in such a way that the overall task can still be fulfilled. Should the main controller fail, a second controller is available in hot-standby.The modular architecture of the AC 800PEC not
